Do You Walk in Love?

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. – Ephesians 5:1-2

How accepting are you? Do you welcome people who are different, whether it’s someone from another culture or a different faith? Do you treat those who are poor with the same respect as you treat those who are wealthy? Do you treat someone warmly, regardless of their social status?

Don’t be so quick to say “Of course!” Our churches are filled with people who are only interested in welcoming people just like them into their fold. “Different” need not apply.

We’re quick to make excuses. We need people who can give back, whether financially or with volunteer hours. We’re not set up to deal with “issues” some folks might bring, things like drug addiction, depression, abusive relationships. Some other church is more equipped to help them. That’s what we tell ourselves, anyway.

Jesus never said to pass our obligations on to someone else. He never said to make people clean themselves up before we extend our hands in love. He also never said our rules and opinions should matter more than loving the lost, the broken, the hungry. In fact, Jesus said just the opposite.

Let’s take it outside of the church for a moment. Do you welcome the new co-worker to lunch with your friends? Do you invite the new neighbors over for the neighborhood cookout? Do you include the new child at school in your own child’s playgroup? Do you extend the hand of welcome, the hand of grace, the hand of acceptance to those you don’t know and those who might not “fit in?”

Who have you rejected today? Who have you excluded from your circle? Who have you made to feel unwanted, unnoticed, unwelcome? Who is walking alone today because you didn’t make an effort to invite them into your world, even if only for a moment, a meal, a short conversation?

Pastor Ryan Martin said yesterday that when we treat people with love and respect, we see a change in them. He’s right. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word and genuine smile to see people blossom right in front of you.

Here’s a basic truth: God loves the outcasts whether we love them or not. God sees the outcasts whether we see them or not. It’s not how hard you love those in your circle that counts. It’s how hard you love those on the perimeter of your world that draws people toward Christ.

We focus on the ugliness in Washington. We condemn those who are different. We spew hatred toward those we paint with a wide brush stroke as evil. And we do it all in the name of Jesus. How ridiculous and how sad.

We justify ourselves using God’s own words. We pull things out of context. We focus on one sentence, ignoring all the others around it. We excuse our own sins while harshly judging someone who sins differently.

Martin noted that God’s Word is a sword. The Bible tells us that. But here’s the rest of that: It can be used for good or evil. God’s Word can be used to strengthen His Kingdom or tear it down.

It’s easy to point fingers and blame others for all the evils in this world. That’s not your job or mine. Judgment belongs to God. Our job is to love people and, in so doing, shine a light that draws them toward Christ.

Get Over Yourself

John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn’t in our group.” – Mark 9:38

It was appalling. It was a ridiculous situation that played out on Main Street during a downtown festival. It should have been about Jesus. Instead, it became about one man’s ego.

A newly planted church had secured a booth at the event. Someone had given them a box of Bibles to give away. They were doing that. Another man, from a different church, recognized that the Bibles were from an organization he’s affiliated with. He was livid and attempted to stop the church group from giving away the Bibles. His reasoning? Only members of the organization were authorized to distribute the Bibles.

It gets worse. He started screaming at the church members. In the middle of downtown. On Main Street. During an event that draws thousands of people. Gosh. I guess that really made people want to know more about Jesus. Seriously?!

I know this man. He’s basically a good person who loves Jesus. Until you disagree with him. Then he turns hateful and mean and you have to wonder about the overall condition of his heart. Fortunately, that’s between him and God.

Did it really matter who was giving away the Bibles? Of course not. The Bibles were a gift intended to be distributed in the exact way they were being distributed. Were any “rules” violated?” I have no idea. Nor do I care. Jesus lived His life as an illustration of how “rules” can miss the point of true faith.

What did Jesus say to the disciples?

“Don’t stop him!” Jesus said. “No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us.” – Mark 9:39-40

Don’t stop him. Don’t stop them. Can’t you just hear Jesus admonishing the man for being focused on the wrong thing? It didn’t matter where the Bibles came from. What mattered is where those Bibles were going and why. God’s Word was being sent out to do His will and touch hearts. That was what was important.

Many years ago I had the opportunity to take a room full of books from a thrift store that was closing. They were free. The only catch was I had to take all of them. In the midst of that large stockpile was 20 plus Bibles of various translations and type size. Some were in excellent condition. Some were kind of shabby. I gave them all away.

I had set up tables at a local flea market. I was sure to put the Bibles in one area and other books for sale in another area. I was amazed at the reactions from people when I told them the Bibles were free. One girl had always wanted her very own Bible. Another person secured a large print Bible for a relative in the nursing home who could no longer read regular-size print.

Suspicion clouded some faces. They were expecting a “catch.” They expected me to insist on a name and number or to be blasted with judgement or a sermon. They didn’t get any of that. Just a smile, a kind word, and my willingness to answer questions if they had any.

It wasn’t about me. It was about sharing God’s Word. It was a beautiful experience of what happens when we simply give without expectation.

Sometimes we get so caught up in our “rules” and in our own agendas that we miss Jesus. We need to get over ourselves and work together to spread His love to all who would draw near.

Stay Alert

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. – Matthew 4:1

Satan is a sore loser. Even though he has already lost, he continues to plague God’s people. We are temped again and again but we have the power within us to resist the devil. If we use it.

Jesus gave us a perfect example to follow. Of course, we aren’t perfect people. Still, it is a lesson all of us should consider, especially on the tough days. The devil waited until Jesus was at his most vulnerable to tempt Him. Satan does the same with us.

Jesus was hungry. He’d fasted for forty days and nights. Can you imagine? And that is where the first temptation came.

“If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loves of bread.” – Matthew 4:3

Don’t miss the word “if”. That’s one of Satan’s most powerful words. He wants to make us doubt who we are as God’s children.

Jesus was ready with Scripture. Are you? Can you, will you, confront Satan’s lies with God’s Word?

But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:4

Satan wasn’t finished. He never really is. Satan will continue to attack us, again and again. The one thing the devil doesn’t want is for God’s children to walk by faith.

“If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” – Matthew 4:6

Do you ever challenge God? Do you test His love for you? Do you ask God again and again to prove His love by giving you the desires of your flesh?

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” – Matthew 4:7

The devil’s attack continued. Just like with us. Have you ever gone through a season where you wondered where God was and why He was allowing the repeated attacks against you? (Read Job for a good lesson on this.) Most of us have been there. The closer we come to God, the more intense the attacks from Satan.

And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” – Matthew 4:9

Oh, we would never worship the devil. Would we? What do you value most in your life? Your home? Your job? Your status? Your bank account? A good test: What would you give up for Jesus? Ah. That’s a different story. We’re all about Jesus until He asks us to sacrifice something we really, really want.

“Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.” – Matthew 4:10

Who do you serve? What do you worship? Satan will continue to prowl this earth and seek to destroy God’s children until Jesus returns and finishes him off forever. In the meantime, remain alert. Call upon God’s Word. We are in a war that, thankfully, Jesus has already won.

God's Word Lights Your Path

Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. I've promised it once, and I'll promise again: I will obey your wonderful laws. I have suffered much, O LORD; restore my life again, just as you promised. LORD, accept my grateful thanks and teach me your laws. My life constantly hangs in the balance, but I will not stop obeying your law. The wicked have set their traps for me along your path, but I will not turn from your commandments. Your decrees are my treasure; they are truly my heart's delight. I am determined to keep your principles, even forever, to the very end.
-- Psalm 119:105-112

Follow God, Not Man

"(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus' words, acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by John. But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God's purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)" -- Luke 7:29-30

Don't assume that someone who stands before you and proclaims God's word is telling you the truth. Sounds pretty basic but so many people just know that if a person has a pastor or minister or brother title before their name then they must be speaking the truth. Not necessarily.
Read the Bible for yourself. Pray. Ask God to surround you with godly people, then seek guidance from those who live God's Word rather than merely speak it. God is more than willing to guide our lives. We simply have to open our hearts and invite Him in.
Never forget that the Pharisees -- the religious leaders of their day -- rejected Jesus as the Messiah. Don't make the same mistake. Trust Him and His Word above all others. He'll never lead you astray.
