Jesus Defeated Death
"Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the grave will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by, you will be beaten down by it." -- Isaiah 28:15
You know, it's never a good idea to trust other people more than you trust God. It'll blow up in your face each and every time. Promise. Every time. No exceptions.
Judah was terrified of Assyria. I understand that. They were bad, bad dudes. But they turned to Egypt to save them, rather than God. Not real smart. But isn't that what all of us do at one time or another? We know that someone else has the answer. It takes a while but we eventually find out they didn't have the answer at all.
We want to believe that money can save us. But sometimes all the money in the world can't heal our illness. It can't save our marriage. It can't make us happy. We're on a merry-go-round trying to find whatever it takes to be satisfied with our lives. We seek God's peace but we don't even know where to begin.
We make such plans. We'll work hard, raise kids, retire, enjoy grandkids, travel. You know the drill. No room in that plan for economic downturns, unexpected illness or early death. Nope. Not in the plan. Except when has life ever followed our plan? I've lost track of the number of people who planned a long retirement with a beloved spouse, only to have that spouse die.
See, we can't defeat death. It's the one certainty in life. We will die. The question then becomes what will happen when we die. Those of us who know Jesus Christ and have placed our faith in His great sacrifice, know that we will have eternal life. The rest of you? I don't blame you for not wanting to think about it.
The altar is open to everyone. God has reached out His hand. It's up to us to take it. To invite Him into our lives. To ask Him to save us. He will, you know. He really will. Every single time. He's there. Place your faith in the One who has already defeated death. He's waiting for you now.
