God Strengthens Us

"My soul is weary wwith sorrow; strengthen me according to your word." -- Psalm 119:28

None of us know how many days we have on this earth. Most of us understand that. In our minds anyway. Not our hearts. Our hearts resist the idea of gut-wrenching pain and early departure from this world even when we know death means we'll wake in the presence of Jesus.

Wednesday a young woman died. She was 23 years old. She left behind a two-month-old baby who was born premature. It was a tragic wreck during a routine errand. The doctors did all they could but a tiny baby will never know its mother.

Later that same day, another wreck claimed another life. This time a 77-year-old woman went home. A simple trip to Dothan. How many times have we all done that? Except this time something awful happened and someone's beloved wife will never make that trip again.

Then there's the store manager, pushing through pain rather than taking time to visit a doctor. It's too late now. Weeks to live, they say. All those things that were so important are suddenly irrelevant. He had all the time in the world, except now he will soon have none.

Tragedy happens. We live in a fallen world. People make mistakes. Lives end. Families are torn apart. Guilt reigns. Sorrow drapes over us, weighing us down. How can we cope? How can we face the aftermath? How can we find the strength to carry on?

God. He is our strength. He carries us when we can't walk through the storm. His light beckons us forward, promising comfort and help. We close our eyes and wait silently. He wraps His loving arms around us. We feel His embrace as the tears flow. He is there. Always. Never leaving our side.
