He Binds His Children Together

"This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them."
-- Mark 14:24

Our church celebrates communion the first Sunday of every month. The band plays a haunting song as everyone makes his or her way up front. I watched the stream of believers today and had to smile to myself. All types of people made their way forward. We were young and old, black and white, male and female. We were dressed in coats and ties, jeans and sneakers, and most everything in between. But we were all bound together with a tie that cannot be broken.

I looked up the word communion in the dictionary. "Fellowship, having ideas or beliefs in common," said my worn copy of the Oxford American Dictionary. Yeah, I thought. That's what it's all about when we gather on Sunday mornings to worship our God. Fellowship. We could sing songs at home, maybe listen to a television preacher. But it isn't quite like gathering together and experiencing His love as it cascades over us as we stand side by side.

So there we are, God's children, bound together by the love of our Heavenly Father and the sacrifice of His Son.
