Don't Waste Precious Time
"What I mean brothers is that the time is short." -- 1 Corinthians 7:29a
We all think we've got a lot of time. We've got plans for tomorrow, for next week, for a month from now. But truly none of us know what waits for us in the future. We might not even have a tomorrow or even another hour.
A sweet woman I know took a tumble this morning. She had planned to leave Friday with her two sisters for a trip to Northern Georgia. Her grandaughter is graduating and she wanted to see her receive her diploma. And we won't even talk about the shopping the three sisters had planned. This woman now sports a boot over her broken foot. Her life has turned upside down. We are all thankful. It could have been much worse.
My best friend had lots of plans for the rest of his life. A heart attack at a rather young age didn't change that. He wanted to go ahead and reschedule the trip we'd canceled because of his open-heart surgery. He didn't expect a blood clot. He was talking with his sister and then he was gone. And all those plans didn't matter a bit because God had another plan.
We spend so much time planning. We plan to invite our neighbor to church some day. We plan to take a long weekend with just our spouse one day soon. We're going to volunteer with (insert any charity) when we have a little more time. Oh yes, we've got a great many plans for a day we may never see.
I'm certainly not against plans. It's fun to dream and organize. But we should remember to not put off the important stuff. That neighbor may die in a car accident tomorrow. People need help today and, as Christians, we are the face of Christ. Is it more important to spend time with someone we love or to watch a television show? Is it more important to play with our kids or to work an extra hour or two?
Time is a precious thing. Don't waste it by spending so much time planning for the future that you forget to live today.
