Place Bible Before Politics
"Give generously to him (your brother) and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land." -- Deuteronomy 15:10-11
The national health care debate has reared its ugly head in the Alabama gubernatorial race. Conservative republicans are touting their morals and hard stance against the "liberal agenda."
I really can't understand raising the Bible in one hand to praise yourself and your values while holding the other hand up to condemn the words of that very same Bible.
Oh, here come the denials. My response? Read the words for yourself. The Bible tells us again and again to take care of the poor, generously without a grudging heart. That doesn't mean when it feels right or is politically correct. It doesn't mean provide for the poor when we feel like we have a little extra money. We are called to do God's will -- period.
As I've said before, I am someone who would almost certainly take a financial hit with the passage of any health care reform bill. I am self-employed. I know what's at stake. It's enough to make me take a big gulp. But God's will is God's will. And above all else I want to do His will. That means supporting health care reform.
What I don't understand is how others can't see and understand the same words I'm reading. Are they even trying to know His will or are they too focused on their own political agenda? I don't have the answer. I only know it's a question that rears its head every time I hear a politicial speaking with a forked tongue.
