God Still Leads Us
"By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people." -- Exodus 13:21-22

Wow! Wouldn't it be awesome to simply look forward, see God and follow Him? No doubts. No questions about the correct path or His will. Just look up, see Him and follow Him. That was how God led the Israelites when they left Egypt for the promised land.

Not that it reassured them. They complained. And complained. And complained. Oops! We wouldn't do that, would we? We're supposed to trust that He knows what He's doing, that He wants what is best for us and follow Him joyfully without complaint. That's pretty difficult. At least for some of us who have a tendency to need a road map, an explanation and a time frame.

Of course, these days we don't have that pillar of cloud or pillar of fire right in front of us. But we do have the Bible. It provides answers to so many questions. The problem comes when we don't like the answers. Sounds a bit like the Israelites doesn't it? We'd rather do things our way even when we know deep inside that God's way is best.

As humans we do tend to have control issues. We want to be in control but we aren't. So we rebel against the very One who only wants what is best for us. Look what happened to the Israelites. They whined so much that God made them wander around for 40 years, until all the original whiners died. Only two of that group were allowed into the promised land -- because they believed God. We could learn a few things from that lesson.

God continues to lead us now if we will only ask and then listen to what He says.
