Talk to God Today

"For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer." -- 1 Peter 3:12a

The television news reported a bad accident that had tied up traffic on a main road. As the camera panned the scene I couldn't help but focus on the bumper sticker of one of the smashed vehicles. It said, "I talked to God today -- have you?"

It appeared that all the people involved in the accident would be fine, despite injuries that required a trip to the hospital. They were blessed. It could have turned out differently. And wouldn't they have been glad they had talked to God today.

It is so easy to put things off, including studying the Bible and spending time in prayer. Understandably, I might add. Kids and parents, jobs and errands. Life has a way of taking control and consuming all of our waking moments, leaving us to fall exhausted into bed. We'll pray tomorrow. We'll read the Bible or take a class another day. But what if we don't have another day?

Life is so fragile. I don't mean that in a morbid way. For believers such as I, death is merely a one-way ticket home. It is a cause for joy and celebration. That doesn't mean I'm planning the trip today. Just that it's important to be ready. To get our priorities straight. To put God first -- not as someone to fit in to a busy schedule when it's convenient.

Take time to talk with God today. And take time to listen too. It's amazing how everything else falls into place when you put God first.
