Don't Judge -- Even On the "Little Things"
"So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?" -- Romans 2:3
Oh, wow. The Bible is filled with uncomfortable truths. We want to think we aren't the one who judges others. Not us. Oh, well, we only judge when we know someone isn't doing what the Bible says.
Okay. We won't even touch on how we know exactly what God meant with each Bible passage and in every circumstance. Or how God has infinite wisdom and knowledge and really doesn't need our help to judge others.
But what about the little things? Ever made a nasty comment to a friend about a co-worker's new hair style? Ever refused to let another driver in front of you in heavy traffic because you knew he already should have changed lanes? Ever criticized someone else's weight gain, all the while carrying an extra 20 pounds on your own frame? Yeah, not too many of us can claim innocence when it comes to our tongues.
My tongue is horrible. I am always on guard, asking God each day to hold my tongue. How about you? Ever say something hurtful without thinking? Ever criticize someone else without really thinking about it? We all judge others without ever stopping to think that we are judging others.
Next time you or I get ready to make a snide remark or assume we know why someone else's actions don't suit us, we should remember that God will judge us the way we judge others. And that is a scary, scary thought. Thank you, Jesus, for your sacrifice! May I show mercy to others as you have shown mercy to me.
