Plant A Seed Today
Jesus asked, “How can I describe the Kingdom of God? What story should I use to illustrate it? It is like a tiny mustard seed. Though this is one of the smallest of seeds, it grows to become one of the largest of plants, with long branches where birds can come and find shelter.” -- Mark 4:30-32
The lyrics to Jesus Loves Me find the most wonderful moments to return to my mind. They are comforting, familiar, soothing. The echoes of a childhood memory that have carried me through my dark nights.
My great-aunt had no idea the seed she sowed that Sunday morning in a little country church. She was being kind to a small child. No other kids at the church were near my age so I was alone but for a kind woman who taught me a song. I sang the words in my mind many times over the years that followed.
Last year I found myself entertaining a friend’s child during a potluck. I told her stories of Jesus as her mom looked on in amazement. Her daughter loved the stories. It’s how children learn. It’s how we all learn. The small moments, the seeds of faith, come as we grow and live our lives.
Those of us who call ourselves Christians, believers in Christ, recognize that Jesus Himself is the vine and we are the branches. (John 15:5) We are nothing without Him. As we grow in faith, our branches grow stronger and reach farther than we could ever imagine.
Small moments matter. A friend noticed that an employee of a business she was visiting was limping slightly. The girl’s shoes were inappropriate and worn out. My friend gave the girl money for new shoes. The girl was amazed. No one had ever done anything like that for her. She wanted to know why. I explained that some people live their faith and try to do good things for others. It’s a lesson she will carry in her heart forever.
Small seeds planted in fertile soil produce a large harvest. A hug. A smile. A meal. A kind word. A Bible verse planted in a hurting soul. Moments in time that last a lifetime.
Life presents us with many opportunities to touch the hearts of those around us. Like Jesus would. And like we should since He lives inside of us. Kindness is just so powerful. Why does it sometimes seem as though it is so elusive?
So take a moment today and plant a seed. You’ll be amazed at how high and how far it can grow.
