Be The Hands And Feet Of Jesus
The LORD helps the fallen and lifts up those bent beneath their loads. -- Psalm 145:14 (NLT)
The sun shines brightly on the devastation. People walk around, dazed, knowing the truth and yet unwilling to accept it. Their lives are forever changed by seconds spent in the path of a tornado.
What now? They try to salvage bits and pieces of things that once seemed important. A photo found here. A piece of clothing over there. It’s hard to believe that so many possessions could just be gone.
Then there is the rest of it all. No place to live. No clothes to wear. No toiletries. No kitchen filled with food. No car. In some cases, no job because your employer is gone too. Few have the financial resources to immediately start over. Insurance helps. The Red Cross and other relief organizations are on site. But it’s difficult to even know what to ask for when normal no longer exists.
Again and again people interviewed by the news media spoke of praying to God during the storm. God’s people cried out and He heard them. He still hears them. God is just as present in the aftermath as He was in the storm.
God’s hands are outstretched to provide comfort and necessities. God’s peace is available to all who seek it. No. It won’t replace things or loved ones. But it will provide strength to walk through this valley.
We have an opportunity to share God’s love with those who are hurting. We can offer practical help, such as money, bottled water, labor. But we can also share God’s love by being kind and compassionate. We don’t need the answer to “why.” We simply need to love people who are hurting.
We’re all just ordinary folks walking through a horrible disaster. Helping each other as best we can. Living our faith in the way Jesus taught. Not turning away from trouble but turning toward it. Helping others to lift their heavy load. Being the hands and feet of Jesus right where we are.
