What Will You Do For Jesus?

“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” -- Mark 14:36

Jesus knew what was coming. He understood what death on a cross was all about. Crucifixion, which seems so barbaric to us, was normal in those times. It was about inflicting maximum pain for as long as possible. Yes, Jesus knew what lay ahead.

As He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane he pleaded with God to take the cup from Him. His very human self wanted to avoid what lay ahead. We surely can understand that. How many times have we stood at the crossroads, wanting to do what we felt led to do and yet trying desperately to avoid it just the same?

Yet, Jesus bowed down to God’s will. Would we do the same? Are we Christians only when it’s convenient and easy? Are we willing to suffer just a little for the One who suffered so greatly for us?

Peter, James and John were with Jesus that night. Jesus was deeply distressed and he asked them to keep watch. Instead, they fell asleep. “The spirit is willing, but the body is weak,” Jesus told them. He could say the same about us. We want to do what’s right. We mean to reach out and touch others with our faith. We long to be believers in action as well as words. But we are just so tired as we live our crowded lives with its demanding schedules.

Maybe it comes down to priorities. Maybe it goes so much deeper than we want to think or believe. That “voice” inside us is the Holy Spirit. It is God calling us forward. Jesus gave Himself as the sacrificial lamb so that we could have this relationship with our Creator. How can we ignore that? How can we shove it aside for a better day, a better time, a better opportunity?

Jesus was willing to die for you. What are you willing to do for Him?
