Reach Toward Higher Ground
From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. -- Psalm 61:2-3
We woke to news that a devastating earthquake had struck Japan. Then came the tsunami. Folks in Hawaii, Alaska, and along the West Coast were being advised to evacuate to higher ground. When the water crashes in, wave after wave, the only refuge is high ground.
Fortunately for the United States, we were spared so much of what could have been. We can now focus our efforts on helping the people of Japan. But maybe, too, we can learn a lesson from the calls to higher ground.
We always think we are safe in our homes. We are safe in our cars. We are safe as we go about our days. We aren't. It's all an illusion. It's just that if we focused on all that we cannot control, we'd be too panicked to live. We don't have to worry about it though. God is in control. He is our higher ground each and every day, no matter what happens.
We can't control the weather. Oh, we can listen to warnings and bulletins and obey the directions of those trying to keep us safe. But they can only do so much. After the devastating tornado that killed eight students, one man said he was astounded at the rubble that was his house. He knew about tornadoes. He understood their power. He just never expected that a tornado could so completely destroy a well-built brick house. He had faith in his house and it came down all around him.
It all goes back to where you put your faith: either in things or in God. Things crumble and fade away. God lasts forever. It's a no brainer. Reach for higher ground. God will save you every time.
