God Saves His People

"Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the LORD and spread it out before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD..."
-- Isaiah 37:14-15a

King Hezekiah was facing a disaster. The king of Assyria wanted Jerusalem and planned to take it, just as he had other nations. Hezekiah could have given in without a fight. He also could have fought to the death. He did neither. He called on God to save His people. And you know what? God did.

It's so easy to get upset and feel hopeless by all the political stuff going on around us. Who is right and who is wrong? Who is honest and who is dishonest? All the political games swirl around. Sometimes I think no one really cares about the people the political decisions impact.

I especially get upset when I hear Christians passing judgement without facts. Or when I hear them focus on one issue -- such as abortion -- and ignore other issues -- like health care for the working poor. How can anyone do that, especially Christians who are called to care for others? It's frustrating.

I don't have a lot of answers. And sometimes I really don't know who to believe. I am just so grateful that God is in control. I'm glad He has a plan. I'm confident that He will save us -- if we only turn to Him. And I do mean turn to Him with actions as well as words. Even when it hurts our pocketbooks. Even when it isn't popular or makes us squirm. Trusting God isn't something a person can be wishy-washy about. You either trust Him or you don't.

In this world of pain and turmoil, I'm hanging on to God. I'm trusting Him with everything. King Hezekiah was right. When everything around us seems destined for disaster, we need to fall to our knees and call on the only One who can save us. It's just sad that we have to reach that point before we realize how much we need Him in our lives.
