Attend Church To Worship God
"Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;" -- Psalm 95:6
Why do you go to church? Because you're supposed to? Because it's expected, especially in the Deep South. To see your family and friends? To get the latest gossip, ah, make that prayer requests?
How about worshipping God? Do you think about celebrating who He is and all He has done and continues to do for you and me? Do enjoy singing songs of praise to Him? Maybe even learn a little about God and what He says in the Bible?
I don't always feel like going to church. I go anyway. It's the least I can do for the One who created me and has given me so much. Funny thing though. Once I get there, once I gather with other people who seek the Lord with their hearts and souls -- my own heart opens up and I feel His Spirit engulf me. Suddenly, I'm glad I came.
If we only do what we "feel like," few of us would ever have clean clothes. The lawn wouldn't get mowed. We might not even make it to work most days. Life is rarely about doing what we "feel like." So when Sunday rolls around, we should head to church and worship God with other believers whether we "feel like" it or not.
We also aren't called to church to socialize or gossip. Not that I don't like the people I see at church. I do like them. And I am concerned when something is wrong. I also celebrate when something goes right. Anyone who knows me knows I believe strongly in the power of prayer.
But it isn't about those things. Church is about celebrating God. It's about learning and growing in His Word. It's about Him -- not us. What is so amazing to me is that when we show up to worship Him -- He turns right around and blesses us.
