Give God Your Heart
"Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God -- this is your spiritual act of worship." -- Romans 12:1
We want to serve God -- when it's convenient. We want to do God's will -- when we agree with it. We want to give to God -- what we decide to give and when.
It's uncomfortable just to open our arms, our minds and our bank accounts and say, "Here, God. Take it all. Do what you want with all I am and all I possess." We mostly aren't willing to do that. He gave us everything and we hold back. Sad, isn't it?
God created us. God loves us. God sent His Son to die for us. All He asks in return is that we live our lives following Him. He wants to give us good things. And He wants us to do good things for others. Why is that so hard?
We tend to horde the gifts God has given us. We claim them as our own. We don't want to share. And we get real upset when someone suggests that we do. All it takes is one person asking for money and we go ballistic. If they want our time, our bodies, our presence -- well, that's awful. We're busy people!
We love God. We do. And we want to do His will -- just on our terms, not His. But that's not really loving God. That's not offering ourselves up as living sacrifices for His will. In order to do that, we must give Him our hearts. We must put Him first. We must trust Him enough to follow Him without reservation. That's hard to do.
I am a person who likes a plan. I like to know where I'm going and when. God doesn't issue road maps. He just says to follow Him. He knows the way, after all. So I do. Or at least I try. I figure He knows my heart and my intentions so when I mess up -- and I do mess up -- He picks me up and sets me on the right path again. He loves me that way.
We owe God everything -- especially our hearts and our lives. It's such a small thing to give Him when He's given us so much.
