Show People Jesus Living In You

"I am still confident in this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living."
-- Psalm 27:1

What I remember most about my surgery a few years ago isn't the frustrations and physical limits it placed on me. I remember the kindness of the people around me. I remember the pound cake Carolyn baked for me, bringing it to my house while it was still warm from the oven. I remember the book from my Sunday school class and the card a little girl brought to my house.

When I talk with people who have faced critical illnesses or have buried a loved one, they talk about the people who stepped up when they needed a shoulder, an ear, a tight hug. They mention the casserole that came when they just didn't have the energy to cook for their kids. They talk about the neighbor who mowed their lawn while they were at the hospital. They mention the friend who took their kids on a special outing away from all the stress at home.

A woman I worked with briefly in California came in late one day. She'd encountered a homeless man asking for money. It was a common sight in the area where we worked. She could have ignored him. Instead, she bought him breakfast.

Sometimes we get overwhelmed and simple don't know what to do. We expect the grand gesture from ourselves because it's what people deserve. But most of the time all they really need is us. When we show people goodness and love, what they see is Jesus living within us.
