God Is There No Matter What

"When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the Lord your God and obey him. For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath."
-- Deuteronomy 4:30-31

I am so grateful that God never gives up on me. Even when I've given up on myself, even when I've made the same mistake yet again, He's there waiting to lift me up.

Sometimes I think we have to hit bottom in order to understand have vulnerable and weak we truly are. We can't control anything. Really. I know it blows our sense of who we think we are, but it's true. Just when we think life is rolling along fine, something happens and everything changes in an instant. For me it was the phone call that told me the person I loved most was dead. Sometimes it's a call with a cancer diagnosis. Other times it's a job loss, a divorce, or a natural disaster.

Sometimes we mess up our lives all by ourselves. We drink and drive. We have an affair. We lie. We steal. We use drugs. Whatever it is, we really destroy our lives and we have no one to blame but the person we see in the mirror looking back at us with condemnation. But not God. He's the one holding out His arms and inviting us to find rest with Him.

The only thing certain about life is its uncertainty. I am so thankful that whatever happens, for whatever reason, God is there. We get what Beth Moore calls a "do over" to get it right, to realign our priorities, to change our course in life. God never ever gives up on us. We are His children and He loves us. He will never abandon us and forsake us -- no matter what we do or what life throws our way.
