Be kind -- First
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." -- Colossians 3:12
The woman was furious in her righteousness. She had just returned from a viewing at the funeral home. Two people she knows hadn't spoken to her. "Did you speak to them," I asked. She stuttered a few times before admitting that she hadn't. Then she started making excuses, pointing the finger back at the offending couple. Her excuse was that because they were in line behind her, they should have spoken first. Excuse me?
I wonder what would happen if we all were willing to reach out first. If we showed kindness first. If we showed compassion first. We are so focused on ourselves that we forget that others have the same insecurities and needs that we have.
We are called to be kind to others. It's not about who speaks first. There's no pecking order in kindness. How often we forget that. We excuse our actions because they didn't call us when we were sick or they didn't remember our birthday or they didn't buy a gift for our child's graduation. The list goes on and on.
So what? It's not about what they did. God doesn't judge us based on what they did. He'll judge them for their actions. Just like He'll judge us for our own actions. We need to stop pointing the finger and blaming others for our own issues. Be kind. Be compassionate. Show other people that Jesus lives in you.
