Give Yourself Some Happiness
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
-- Romans 12:13
What is the difference between living and living well? Dr. Karl Stegall posed that question last Sunday. He gave a three point list: Focus on Jesus, celebrate your church, and serve others.
Some people are already wondering where they fit in. Not how they can follow Jesus, work in their church or serve others. They aren't worried about that. They want to know what's in it for them. They would be the folks lined up in the unhappy with life line.
I know. Shocking, isn't it. People who serve others are happier than people who serve themselves. Think about it. Don't you feel good when you give someone a present they really like? Don't you enjoy helping a child learn something and watching his eyes light up with joy when he finally gets it? Sure, you get momentary happiness when you buy something new or get a promotion. But it's a short-lived thing when the item gets old and the promotion gets stressful. The happiness that comes from doing for others lasts forever in your heart.
Studies have show that the happiest people in the world are those who give unselfishly of themselves. They're happier than professional athletes, blockbuster actors or chart-topping singers. Yeah. I know. It seems strange because it goes against what the world tells us to believe. Missionaries in remote areas facing all types of hardships are happier than people living in Manhattan. Who knew?
Well, now you know. So give yourself some happiness. Do something good for someone else. You'll be glad you did.
